I think we have all experienced poor communication at some point in our lives, especially with the addition of modern technology into the pot. If you are thinking, “No I don’t think so.” I will provide you with some scenarios that you possibly have run across in your everyday life.

• You’re at work and you get an email from your boss. “I want xyz done and on my desk by 5pm” You get two things from this email, you have been assigned a task and your boss is nicely telling you if you get off at 4pm guess what NOT TODAY (LOL). So you immediately get ready to start your new assignment only to realize the next thing (after you have cussed because you were supposed to go out for drinks later to wash off the hellish work week) your boss included no instructions. Now if this is a task you have done before and you can do in your sleep great, however if it is not. You have just been a victim of poor communication.
• You call your local cable provider because for some reason you see charges on your bill that you know you didn’t make. You put all the information into the automated system (while silently wishing they would dismantle the thing and use it for spare parts in some remote junk yard in costa rica) and wait for a person. The representative gets on the phone and re-confirms your information for security purposes and then asks how they can help. You explain the situation and you are told it will be taken care of. You hang up the phone feeling accomplished. The following month you receive a new bill and it isn’t taken care of, you go through the whole song and dance again only to find that it was not taken care of. You express your outrage to the rep your currently speaking too and demand it to be corrected. The current rep tells you it cannot be corrected because of xyz reason. You tell them that was not what you were told when you called about it on said date and spoke to John Doe. This is when the rep lowers the boom your previous call wasn’t even documented to your account by John Doe. You have been just a victim of poor communication.
Communication is more important than ever now, its how we get things done in life when it involves two parties. I say two parties because if your doing something for yourself; you don’t have to communicate anything, you just do it. However when other parties are involved it takes a bit of information to ensure the exchange is accurate fair and the end result is a positive one.

Poor Communication can come in various forms especially online: Tweets, Text Messages, Emails… the list is virtually endless. The question is how can you correct it? Unfortunately with so many people using these forms of communication it’s hard to effectively and completely eliminate the communication menace. It can however be some what eliminated if everyone took the time to absorb, read, understand and respond appropriately. It would make things a lot easier. Follow up that email with a phone call at a later date. Take the time to spell check that letter to the ceo and take note of the tone you are sending as not to offend. Maybe this particular topic doesn’t need to be sent via text message maybe it would be best left for a face-to-face conversation.

I am pretty sure if we all work towards that common goal there would be a lot less hurt feelings and a lot clearer intentions.

Since the introduction to social media and yes I am taking it back to the old days of the first chat rooms there has been a surge of trending habits surrounding word of mouth promotion from happy and satisfied customers. It would simply start off as a conversation about something (didn’t matter what!) and then the questions would begin “Where did you get that? Or “How much is that?” Or “I have been trying to find one of those where did you get it?” or “What service do you have? “Or “How is their customer service?” A person would generally answer and possibly just possibly the other person would take the information given and buy into whatever it was.

Now that is exactly what happens every minute, of every day, of every week... you get the picture. With the inventions get it now social media apps and sites like twitter and face book the amount of marketing that goes into each company tweet is astounding. There are meetings upon meetings about how they want to approach the public, inform the public, assure the public and eventually make the public their consumer.

All it takes is one friend to tell another friend who puts it on face book, twitter, tumblr, dig, or whatever social media site they are on and then the world knows!  Welcome to the new way of influencing of consumer habits.

There are many types of ways it’s put out there:

The Direct: A person to person or site to site display of products and/or services that tell the person looking hey come on down and see if there is something you like, want, or need.

The Indirect: This one is my favorite, often done by a third party, sometimes they are supporters sometimes they are employees but they submerge themselves into the social media medium of their choice and all they talk about , refer too or push  is that product. When they are questioned they have the latest information but know how to pass it off as a friend talking to a friend rather than a salesman trying to get you to buy.

The Subliminal/Subtle : These are usually done with viral campaigns they give you bits and pieces of a ad, movie plot and then leave you hanging while playing so if it catches your eye , your left wondering “What was that and how can I find out more about it?”  It is also done by miscellaneously (but not really) dropping the information and forgetting about it. The theory behind this is: If they are curious (which we all are) we will dig deeper.

Social media has more of an influence than many would it credit for, think about the last thing that you have bought, I mean really think. Where did you get the information on where to buy it? What it was for? How much it cost? When it would be open to the public?  & why it was so important to have? I am sure at least 1-3 if not all of those questions were answered by a social media site.

So before you scoff at a tweet, fb status or whatever else it is... Think about how much impact it  made before it got to you.

Gone are the days when professional courtesy was a standard now it has merely phased into a option. I see often undercutting in big business settings as well as small settings. It is now a commonly used practice especially in public relations. You want to take business from someone the first thing you go for is their creditability.

You ruin their creditability you also ruin the change of recovery, but the question does become after you have done all that are people looking at you now because of the long hours you put in or the fact that you will sling mud to make it to the top.

Gone are the days when business people networked with the true intensions of expanding upon their businesses and including others in that expansion, now at most events there is always 1-5 cases of “They don’t like me” or  stand-offish gawkers who have heard various accounts of the truth from tainted sources.  This is also a part of that ruin the creditability tactic.

I don’t remember exactly when that was a professional way to carry on at a event but maybe I missed some sort of memo or maybe I am too focused on what I remember being professional to actually mean.

When professional courtesy was a widely practiced art this was something that wasn’t so noticeable, it also was not as intense as it has become in recent years.  With all markets being saturated with new workers and new businesses springing up it is becoming clear that no one wants to play fair.

Let us know what professional courtesy & professionalism means to you no matter your industry and or field your feedback is greatly appreciated.

In this new dawn of economic rebuild often people are forced to change their profession however it seems that with this change of profession and pursuit of the American dream a problem arises. That problem is over saturation in the job market in certain fields.

Over saturation can be a problem and is often why certain fields have high competitive rates everyone one is doing it. The question is how can you make yourself stand out from the rest, education is always a good start. If you have working experience even better, but I have found that letting your business speak for itself and building a solid foundation is always the first step.

Now when people look at Blue Orchid they may not see a flashy company, which is because even though we used modern tactics we do however stay close to home with the old ones because they worked.  In the ages of technology that more often than not goes down without notice you can’t be without proper back up; the job still must get done.

I have spent myself countless hours writing up press releases and them faxing, snail mailing, and emailing them just to ensure that they make it into the hands of the person they are meant for. Yes it is time consuming, mind numbing and tedious but it works.

That is what my foundation was built on “doing what works.”  I notice now everyone qualified or not has a PR at the end of their name, and while many don’t boast their credentials on Front Street I often see the green in their work ethic.  We were all green at one time so it isn’t a knock on them and for some people it actually works. However again – Everyone is doing it.  So that means you need a edge, a big one that sets you apart from the rest now you have your foundation what else can you add to give you a boost?

Flexibility is the next point of addition.

You often have to improvise on a moment’s notice when the market is saturated in order to give yourself the edge you need to stand out , however this does not mean go out and create some type  of mockery  situation just boost business. That in itself is foolish and doesn’t represent the company well in the long run if you’re looking for longevity.  What I mean by flexibility is the ability to wear many hats that can reflect well on your company.  That can be anything from simply helping out a charity, to doing work for free.  It always looks good on your resume that they see you were able to make something from nothing.  It is also good that you can reproduce the desired results but tailored to fit the client.

I always look for ways to specially fit my client’s needs to ensure they get what they want from the company. It’s what keeps us recommended and keeps us in the game.

So now you have your foundation laid and you have added flexibility to the game what is something else that can assist you in making your name pop into everyone’s minds.  That next step would be work ethic. Time and time again I see the same thing, a person is a great worker, awesome in fact but they are hard to work with or they have started some drama for some odd reason and now the winds travel and people are starting to rather not do business with them.  When you are labeled the best but people would rather risk doing business with something else because of your antics that have been recorded and documented that’s a problem.

Me, personally I do my best to keep my work and my personal life separate and in the happenstance they do cross they will work well together. Even if it’s the worst possible scenario I go for protecting my company’s reputation first.  I do my best to be courteous to everyone I meet and keep them in mind for projects that I might have brewing upon the horizon at a later date; Which leads to the next addition building a strong network.

In any business you need a strong network to help you to build your companies legacy and reputation word of mouth still is the best tool that many people have to get their information out there, yes TV, radio, facebook, twitter, websites, text messages, emails, and everything else helps but if a person comes to you and recommends someone you have a tendency to want to check into that first before you do anything else.  Now with that being said that means you have to act accordingly, massive over reactions, public breakdowns, and other things that happen do not reflect well at all. It presents you as unstable and possibly your company if they aren’t familiar with you at all.

If you have any more tips to add on how you can make yourself stand out in over saturated markets feel free to post a comment we would love to hear from you .

Could Vivienne Tam for HP’s new computer-clutch be the “It” accessory of the season? A minor role in the upcoming Sex and the City 2 film (in theaters May 27) certainly won’t hurt its chances! Kim Catrall’s character Samantha Jones will sport the chic Vivienne Tam-designed computer (the first-ever “digital clutch”) on the big screen. Resembling a metallic evening bag, the mini laptop is painted gold and flirtily embellished with two brightly colored butterflies. Unlike the movie, however, you don’t have to wait to buy this $600 techie must-have. Visit HP.com/viviennetam to order!

Michael Jackson is apart of the first class of entertainers to be honored with stars on a new Walk Of Fame site outside of New York's Apollo Theatre.

Along with the King of Pop Michael Jackson, others to be honored will be The Godfather of Soul James Brown, Quincy Jones, Patti LaBelle, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Aretha Franklin , Little Richard and Ella Fitzgerald.

The plaques were installed this week for everyone except Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin. Jackson and Franklin's plaques will be unveiled in June with the Gala Benefit.

Each year at the non-profit Theater's Spring Gala Benefit, legendary musicians, artists, and entertainers whose path to fame included the Apollo are inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame.

The Apollo theater is celebrating its 75th anniversary year.
